Assistance with applications

Migration agents can help with choosing the right visa type for your individual circumstances and then help with the application process.

You can make your own application for State nomination and for a visa without professional help, however if you are not sure about the application process it would be advisable to seek assistance, particularly for more complex visas. It is important to note that using an agent or lawyer for visa applications will not influence the outcome of applications.

Finding a migration agent

If you are engaging a migration agent in Australia, please make sure that the agent is registered with the Migration Agents Registration Authority (MARA). You can check if your chosen agent is registered on the MARA website. With certain exceptions, it is an offence for a person in Australia to provide immigration assistance if they are not registered with MARA.

To find a migration agent in Australia by visa type specialisation and geographic location you can use the Migration Institute of Australia’s website. You can use the MARA website to find agents based on their location.

Migration agent obligations

All migration agents are expected to act professionally; have a good knowledge of migration laws and perform in a timely manner; detail all costs involved; keep you up to date with the application and progress; keep information confidential; and abide by the migration agents code of conduct.

If you are using a migration agent within your own country, it is important to make sure they are also registered with MARA or that they meet local laws and registration requirements in your country.

If you have a concern about a registered migration agent, you should contact MARA.

MARA investigates complaints against registered migration agents and may take disciplinary action against them.
